Sewer line replacement in Riverside

Some lines cannot be saved. When the camera shows a collapse, a crushed section or a belly that holds water, the lateral is replaced, and in Riverside most of that replacement still happens without a trench.

When a line is replaced rather than lined

Lining restores a pipe; replacement removes it from the equation. The line between the two is drawn by the camera. A lateral that still holds its round shape and its slope, however cracked or root-bound, is a lining candidate. A lateral that has collapsed, been crushed by a tree root or a slab footing, flattened because it was Orangeburg, or settled into a belly that holds inches of standing water has nothing left to line. Those lines are replaced, and in Riverside the replacement is usually trenchless too.

Trenchless replacement: pipe bursting

Pipe bursting pulls a cone-shaped head through the old pipe from a pit near the main to a pit at the house, fracturing the old pipe outward while new fused HDPE follows behind it along the same path. The yard, driveway, slab and street between the two pits are not opened. The new pipe has no joints, does not corrode, flexes with the soil instead of cracking, and is rated for a hundred-year service life. Bursting can also upsize the line, from 4 to 6 inches, for a property that has grown. It is the default replacement method on a Riverside County lateral, and sewer line replacement in Riverside shows how it is done in Riverside.

Where a short trench still makes sense

Occasionally a section cannot be burst: a pipe crushed directly under a footing, a connection at the main that has to be rebuilt, or a fitting a bursting head cannot pass. Then that section, and only that section, is replaced open-cut: a trench a few feet long, new PVC or ABS joined with approved couplings, a city inspection, backfill and compaction. The rest of the line is lined or burst. Replacing the whole run by trench, the old default, is now the exception, reserved for lines so shallow and short that a trench is simply faster.

The camera decides, the proposal explains

A replacement proposal should point at the footage: here is the collapse at forty-two feet, here is the belly between sixty and seventy feet, this is why lining is not an option. It should name the method, the pipe, the permit plan and the warranty. If a proposal recommends replacement without a camera inspection, or recommends a full trench without explaining why bursting will not work, get a second opinion. how replacement is planned describes how a replacement is planned from the inspection forward.

Permits, locating and the right of way

Lateral replacement needs a plumbing permit; work under the sidewalk or street needs an encroachment permit and often a separate inspection of the connection at the main. Utility locating is done before any pit is opened or any head is pulled. The contractor handles all of it, and the proposal should say so.

What the new line comes with

A post-installation video showing the new pipe end to end, the permit sign-offs, the material documentation and a written warranty. For HDPE installed by bursting the warranty term is long, and the documents are what a buyer, a lender or an insurer will ask for later. The installer standards behind the network are at the trenchless reference.

Questions we hear about sewer line repair & replacement

How do I know whether my line needs replacement or lining?+

From the camera. A pipe that holds its shape is lined; a pipe that has collapsed, flattened or bellied is replaced. The inspection report should say which and show the footage that supports it.

Is replacement always a trench?+

No. Pipe bursting replaces the whole line through two small pits. Open-cut is reserved for a short section that bursting cannot pass, such as a crushed pipe directly under a concrete footing, and even then the trench is a few feet, not the whole run.

What pipe is used for a replacement in Riverside?+

Fused HDPE for pipe bursting, a single continuous length with no joints. For a short open-cut section, SDR-35 PVC or ABS joined to the existing line with approved couplings, inspected by the city before backfill.

Who owns the lateral under the street?+

In Riverside County cities the property owner generally owns the lateral to the main, including the section under the right-of-way. Replacement under the street needs an encroachment permit and inspection, which the contractor handles.

How do I get a quote?+

Call or send the form; a camera inspection comes first, and the proposal names the method and the footage it is based on. Estimates are free; call now.
