Pipe bursting in Riverside

When a sewer line is too far gone to line, pipe bursting replaces it along the same path through two small pits, with the yard, driveway and street in between left alone.

What pipe bursting does

Pipe bursting replaces a sewer line without digging it up. A cone-shaped bursting head, slightly larger than the old pipe, is pulled through it by a cable or rod from a pit at one end to a pit at the other. As it moves, it splits the old clay, cast iron, Orangeburg or ABS outward into the surrounding soil, and new high-density polyethylene pipe, fused into one continuous length, follows directly behind it along the same path. The lawn, the driveway, the slab and the street between the two pits are never opened. In Riverside, where a lateral can run a hundred feet or more from the house to the main under landscaping and pavement, that is the difference between a day and a week.

When it is the right method

Cured-in-place lining is the first choice for most Riverside County laterals, because it works through the cleanout with no pits at all. But a liner needs a host pipe that still has its shape. The camera sometimes finds a section that has collapsed, a run of Orangeburg that has flattened, a belly so deep it holds standing water, or a pipe that was too small for the house from the start. Those lines cannot be lined, and bursting replaces them. It is also the answer when the property needs a larger line: the bursting head can be sized to upsize from 4 to 6 inches in the same pull. trenchless sewer replacement in Riverside explains how the choice is made on a Riverside job.

How the job runs

The camera inspection maps the line and locates the collapse or belly. The crew opens a launch pit near the main and a receiving pit at the house, typically a few feet square each; where a cleanout riser or a manhole already exists, that is used instead of digging. The bursting head and the fused HDPE pipe are staged, the pull begins, and the old pipe fractures outward as the new one is drawn in behind it. The new pipe is connected at both ends, the pits are backfilled and compacted, and the camera records the finished line. A residential pull is usually done in a day. how a bursting job is sequenced shows the sequence and what the property needs to provide.

What you get

A brand-new pipe. Fused HDPE has no joints for roots to enter, does not corrode, and is rated for a hundred-year service life. It bends with soil movement rather than cracking, which matters in the expansive clay under much of Riverside County. Where a liner restores the old pipe, bursting removes the old pipe from the equation entirely, which is why it is the method for lines that are beyond restoring.

Permits and the street

Bursting under the public right-of-way needs an encroachment permit in addition to the plumbing permit, and some cities require the connection at the main to be inspected before the pit is closed. The contractor pulls the permits and schedules the inspections. Utility locating is part of every bursting job, since the head moves soil and must stay clear of water, gas and electrical lines; that is on the contractor, not the owner.

What to ask

Ask why bursting rather than lining, and expect the answer to point at the camera footage. Ask what pipe is going in, how it is joined, and the warranty term. Ask about permits, locating and restoration of the two pits. The network's installer standards, at the CIPP and trenchless reference, describe what a verified contractor is expected to show for this work.

Questions we hear about pipe bursting

When is bursting better than lining?+

When the pipe no longer has a shape to line: a collapse, a crushed section, a long belly that holds water, or a line that is undersized and needs to go up a diameter. Lining is usually the first choice when it is possible; bursting is the answer when it is not. The camera decides.

How big are the pits?+

Typically a few feet square at each end of the run, one at the house side and one near the connection to the main, often inside an existing cleanout location or a manhole. Everything between them stays undisturbed.

What pipe goes in?+

High-density polyethylene, fused into one continuous length with no joints, with a service life rated at a hundred years. It is pulled in behind the bursting head in one piece.

Can the line be made bigger at the same time?+

Yes. Upsizing a 4-inch lateral to 6 inches is a common reason to choose bursting over lining, especially for a property that has added bathrooms or units since the line was built.

How do I get a quote?+

Call or send the form. A camera inspection comes first; if the line cannot be lined, the proposal explains why and prices the bursting job. Estimates are free; call now.
